Dubai Rugby Sevens is the premier rugby event
in Dubai. Started by a small group of British expatriates
who were keen to do something to break the monotony
of their lives, Dubai Rugby Sevens has now become an
integral part of the culture of
Dubai.
Exiles Club Dubai was the first step in the initiation of
Dubai Rugby Sevens. These expatriates bought land in
Bur Dubai in 1966 and then went about transforming it
into a rugby field. After overcoming certain initial
hassles, the Exiles Club has managed to host Dubai
Rugby Sevens with bigger success every year.
The present venue for Dubai Rugby Sevens is located on Al Awir Road. Having a seating capacity of more than 30,000 people, this ground is built on 180,000 square meters. In fact, it has become one of the popular tourist attractions in Dubai.
Not many people follow rugby in Dubai.
However, due to the growing popularity of Dubai
Rugby Sevens, locals and tourists make it a
point to enjoy this particular rugby event.
Dubai Rugby Sevens witnesses participation from some of the best rugby
teams across the world. With more than 1,700 participants
and around 12,000 overseas visitors will make this event
a spectacular show.
Officially sponsored by Emirates Airlines, Dubai Rugby Sevens
has the support of various multinationals and big corporate
houses. The event is broadcast live to various countries
and is widely covered by the world Press.
Dubai Rugby Sevens also features magnificent live entertainment
shows that are real crowd pullers. During
this time, it is very difficult to get rooms in the
hotels of Dubai that are in
close proximity to the venue.
Dubai Rugby Sevens 2006, held from 30 November to 2 December,
was an event par excellence. It was the 37th edition
of this annual extravaganza.
